Fennia Prize Grand Prix 2012: Fingrid & Muotohiomo

Less visible, stronger and long lasting design in large scale: Fingrid field tower 2012.

Fingrid Plc maintains Finland’s national electricity transmission grid with its large power lines extending throughout the country. The new field tower is an important investment for Fingrid. Its design had to consider appearance, security, strict technical requirements, manufacturing and maintenance costs, and environmental factors. The design of the tower sought to minimize negative impact on cultivation – the idea for a tower type that would save arable land originally came from farmers. A difference in comparison with the conventional tower type is the lack of guylines, permitting easier use of agricultural machinery near the tower.

The innovative foundation of the tower is of heavy prefabricated concrete elements that are brought to the site. The protective structures around the base of the tower prevent collisions, and the soil can be tilled right next to the tower. The traditional lattice structure has been replaced with a more open one, making the tower merge better into the surrounding landscape. The erection and maintenance of the field tower can now be carried out more efficiently. Muotohiomo was fully responsible to innovate and create design consepts to engineer new type of field towers. Work continues with new smaller pylons fof 110 kv.

Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra is an independent public fund which under the supervision of the Finnish Parliament promotes the welfare of Finnish society.

Sitra is undergoing an organisational redesign. Muotohiomo designed a product family for Sitra´s internal communication to promote newly drawn values.
The product family consists of the slogan logos, custom post-it notes, PPT presentations, computer wallpapers and coffee cups.

Nokia Next Billion lounge illustrations

Muotohiomo designed an illustration series for Nokia Next Billion Lounge–panel discussion, held in London in November 2011.

Stockmann Terrace

Stockmann Depatment Store has opened a new terrace garden in the very center of Helsinki. It is Located in Keskuskatu 1, in good company between the commerce building designed by Sigurd Froseterus in 1930 and Ironhouse (Rautatalo), designed by Alvar Aalto in 1955.

The Stockmann Terrace project included idea work, all planning and consultation in building permit.

Ilmastoinfo

Ilmastoinfo (eng.climateinfo) helps city residents to reduce their carbon footprint. They provide practical instructions and guidance at the Sanoma House in Helsinki City Centre and online. Ilmastoinfo also organizes events in cooperation with corporations, companies, clubs and local associations.

Muotohiomo has helped Ilmastoinfo with multiple design tasks varying from interior design to service design in www-environment. In 2011 we designed the Sanoma House multifunctional service space that serves to inform, inspire and educate people towards more sustainable lifestyles.

Our team was also responsible for the exhibition design for “Energiatehdas”,
an event held in Kaapelitehdas in April promoting energy efficient solutions in ones everyday lives.

Aalto University

Established in 2010, the Aalto University is a new, strongly future-oriented university where science and art meet technology and business.

Muotohiomo designed Aalto University’s new office spaces for the Aalto administration located in the Espoo campus area. The interior design was based on the idea of different things coming together, a positive collage of things, thoughts and ideas that will create a energetic mindset for the work environment.

Finnish design, identity colous and budget effectivity were also key drivers for the project.
